On the Discomfort and Insights from Navigating Liminal Space

Upon wrapping up my training and becoming a certified Wayfinder Master Coach, I entered into a deeply uncomfortable liminal space. And as I moved through it, it became clear that I needed to let some things go.

[Note: I initially shared this in my newsletter. If you’d like to receive reflections like this via email, click here.]

I spent a month in a deeply uncomfortable liminal space.

My friend, I've recently transitioned out of a liminal space that lasted a good month. It began around the time I became a certified Wayfinder Master Coach, and though this was a huge accomplishment—the collective culmination of seven months of master coach training plus the year and half spent in training and mentorship to become a life coach—I was loving the journey and didn't want it to end.

But end it did. And though I offered my cohort, the mentor coaches, and Martha a rite of passage ritual to close out our latest seven months of work, I still found myself struggling with the finality of things.

When I graduated, I had also been an active participant in two other containers—one of which was a fantastic group coaching container—and with master coach training behind me, I now had the capacity to dive in even more fully.

So what did I do? I quit.

    Both containers.

You see, the liminal space prompted a lot of reflection, including the website overhaul I mentioned at the beginning of this email. What is it that I truly want? Who am I actually here to serve? What's next? That sort of thing.

Questions I'd explored a million times before.

But this liminal space was more than a period of reflection; it was an opportunity to just BE with myself. To let curiosity guide me more than I'd been willing to let it guide me in the past. And—most disconcertedly—a time to allow for inertia.

I didn't enjoy this liminal space, but I did learn a lot about myself as I settled into it.

Most importantly, I learned that I needed to let outside distractions go.

Once I followed through on my decision to let these distractions go, the inertia and liminal discomfort began to lift. Since then, clarity has been coming in waves...the clarity of who I'm here to serve (which was partly behind the website overhaul), what is it that I truly want (which was behind why I let one of the two containers go), and what's next (which is that it's time to stop hiding behind my website projects and start engaging more with the people I'm here to serve).

Action and service are in the pipeline, though I'm still wrapping my head around what this looks like. I plan to spend some time finalizing my seasonal plan for winter before the Solstice arrives in a few weeks.

Also in the pipeline—actually, it's here right now!—is a commitment to myself to busy myself less. My whole being exhaled relief as I typed that...

    Now, circling back to you…

Is there anything in your life that you're being nudged to let go of? If you are like most people in the West, I'm guessing that there may be multiple things.

    • What are they?

    • How might it be in service to you to let them go?

    • What will you do to fill the void that opens up?

    • How does sitting with these questions (and their answers) feel in your body?

    • Is there a turtle step you can take to help you act on any nudges you're feeling?

    That is all.
